Event Brief:
The “Voices of Practice: A Series on Meaningful Community Engagement” is an initiative by the Community Engagement and Involvement (CEI) team of the NIHR Global Health Research Centre for Non-Communicable Diseases and Environmental Change and co-led by our Public Advisory Board to empower researchers and practitioners to integrate CEI principles into their work. Aligning with the centre’s goals of co-production, advocacy, and thought leadership, the series aims to create a space for learning, reflection, and dialogue to ensure research remains grounded in community realities and genuinely community owned.
Session | 1:
Title: Who owns research? Shifting Power to the Communities
The inaugural session of the series was held on 28th August 2025 in collaboration with the Global Fund for Children and The George Institute for Global Health.
Ms. Rituu B Nanda, a passionate advocate for community-led change and a valued member of our Public Advisory Board, led the conversation with her partners and highlighted the different aspects of community-led research along with the pivotal role communities play in enriching equitable research.
The session welcomed nearly 100 participants from diverse backgrounds. Together, we explored how communities can move from being participants in research to co-creators of knowledge, sparking powerful dialogue around shifting power and redefining roles in the research process.
Thematic Focus
The objective of the Voice of Practice series is to foster understanding, collaboration, and learning among participants to foster community-led research in an inclusive manner. The inaugural session of the series focused on the following four key thematic areas:
- Insights into how communities can move from just participants to co-creators of knowledge
- Real stories from grassroots NGO partners that showcase community leadership in action
- Practical strategies to embed inclusion and participation into your work
- A space to engage, question, and co-learn with peers who are rethinking the researcher- community relationship
