Members of the NIHR Global Health Research Centres (GHRC) for Non-Communicable Diseases and Environmental Change along with members from other GHRCs from around the globe came together for their Second Annual Symposium, in April 2025. Hosted by the NIHR Global Health Research Centre (GHRC) for Multiple Long-Term Conditions in Leicester, the Symposium brought together researchers, policymakers, and experts from across the world to study the crucial nexus of capacity building and sustainability in global health research on non-communicable diseases.
The event featured dynamic sessions including roundtable conversations, panel discussions, interactive consultations & more to explore the role digital solutions, leadership building, and policy interventions can play in supporting public health research.



Event Highlights included a panel discussion led by Professor Christopher Millett on the opportunities, challenges, and objectives to enhance research capacity strengthening strategies across the world.
The discussions were around crucial questions on how the Global Health Research Centres under NIHR are aiming to improve research capacity in their specific regional contexts. Developing strategies to respond to contextual gaps and offering a platform to exchange knowledge to help implement plans that boost research capacity development.

Interactive sessions emphasized the significance of grassroots initiatives and creative activities undertaken by community engagement and involvement teams across Global Health Research Centres to drive positive change in public health and reduce health hazards. Highlighting the role empowering communities can play in encouraging collaboration, and how community engagement can help contribute towards more efficient and sustainable research solutions that are adapted to regional requirements.

The Annual Symposium attended by all the NIHR Global health research Centres brought together researchers and subject-matter experts onto a common platform to collaborate, examine creative approaches towards sustainable health research, and bring the conversation of building research capacity to the forefront. The NIHR Global Health Research Centre for Non-Communicable Diseases and Environmental Change is proud to be a part of the conversation and aims to foster & support the researchers leading the discourse.
