Food Systems Research in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
About the Course: The NIHR Global Health Research Centre for Non-communicable Diseases and Environmental Change (NIHR-GHRC NCDs & EC) is pleased to announce a 3-month online course titled “Food Systems Research in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs).” This course intends to provide an overview of food systems, their components, assessment methods, key drivers, and interventions in the LMIC context.
Course Contents:
- Food systems elements: food supply chains, food environments, driver of food systems, sustainable food systems, diets and nutrition
- Methods and tools to assess food systems, its sustainability with a focus on food environment and supply chain
- Innovations that address sustainability of food supply chains
- Leveraging food systems research using participatory approaches to co-create food systems intervention and inform actions to improve diets and nutrition
- Developing sustainable food systems interventions
Course Duration: 3 months (1st October – 24th December 2024)
Faculty: The lead faculty for this course will be Dr Suparna Ghosh Jerath, Program Head Nutrition at The George Institute for Global Health, India. She also leads the Food Systems theme of the NIHR GHRC (NCDs &EC). Other faculty include:

- Dr Gwenyth Lee, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Biostatistics & Epidemiology, Rutgers School of Public Health (USA)
Who can apply: Post-graduate and doctoral students in nutrition, environmental sciences, agricultural sciences, and public health are encouraged to apply. Participants pursuing degree in public health management and rural development are also welcome to apply.
How to apply: There is no fee to enroll in this course. Interested participants are required to share a statement of purpose (not more than 300 words) on why they would want to enroll in the course. Please note that only selected candidates will be notified via email by 15th September 2024.
Time commitment: The expected time commitment from participants is approximately 30 hours over a period of 3 months. This includes:
- Live lectures via Zoom (around 12 hours)
- Preparatory reading material (12 hours)
- End-of-course assignment (4 hours)
Selected candidates are expected to attend all the online live sessions, participate in all course-related activities and submit the end-of-course assignment for successful course completion.
Course Completion: A certificate of participation will be provided to candidates with a minimum of 75% attendance and successful submission of the end-of-course assignment.
